I am not sure if i wanted to write the words to tell of ernesto che guevara’s experience as much as i wanted to personally jump on my own motorcycle with him and his friend alberto granado throughout south america. He has not grown old as fidel has grown old, and so the motorcycle diaries, the bold and thrilling testament of youth, are growing to be the most potent part of che's myth. His descriptions of the different customs, foods, accommodation and hospitality of the countries they passed through are fascinating.

“the motorcycle diaries” is a beautifully wrought account of the dawning of the social conscience of one of the 20th century’s most romanticized revolutionaries. We follow his mishaps, encounters with strangers, discussions about poverty and poor health care, and general impressions of south america of the 50s. Che is probably the most famous guerilla of all time (not the big hairy kind), a revolutionary, an icon for an era but this book doesn’t tell the story of his march to greatness.

The diaries he wrote en route, and which record their disasters and discoveries, have long been a best seller and were recently the subject of a feature film now out on dvd. It was a fitting book for a road trip, and really made me take myself a lot less seriously during the inevitable snags of traveling. Motorcycle diaries by ernesto ‘che’ guevara.
