Writer so skillfully weaves a web of images, so masterfully recreates the atmosphere of the summer holidays of twelve douglas spaulding and his friends, that you begin to wonder if your not this summer, are not you running in greentown, illinois in the summer of 1928? Early on in the book, douglas thinks about the continual war that is waged between the town and nature, and he considers the ravine to be the middle ground. Just the word evokes feelings of freedom and excitement when presented to the school aged child that still resides deep inside even the most jaded adult.

So the ravine is not really a part of the town, or at least it. A real work of classic american literature , it captures a time likely gone forever and offers profound insight into human life. Like a lot of thrillers, once the action starts to escalate it’s best to read all at once because the pace quickens, and the twists and turns come hard and fast.
